Wahine Wisdom

Unique in surfing, Fuego board designs were originally concepted and designed by a woman shaper to "fit" a woman's surfing style better. But during development and testing, Fuego discovered that its board designs offered fun and performance advantages to all surfers.

Some would argue that women and men surf the same, and at advanced levels, Fuego agrees. But for many women surfers, weight distribution differences do create additional challenges - the illustrations on this page show how locomotion generation (paddling and wave-catching) is affected. Both male and female surfers generate locomotion from the shoulder and chest area by paddling, but women have to drag their area of greatest weight (lower torso). This is less efficient than locomotion being generated by the area of greatest weight as it is when male surfers paddle.

The paddling difference most affects mid-length to shortboard surfers, and leaving some width and thickness in the area just behind the board mid-point can increase a wahine's paddling efficiency.

The design problem on the longboard side of things is board width compared to arm length. Most longboards are 23-24 inches wide, while the distance from wrist to underarm on most women is around 21 inches. This difference can make paddling, and even carrying, a longboard difficult. Fuego designed the outlines of the Firestarter and Firestarter Mini-Mal to work optimally with narrower widths - these longboards are easy to carry and don't sacrifice performance and stability.

Fuego surfboards' sizing, foils and proprietary outlines are uniquely designed and tested to help all surfers, including wahines, maximize their surfing ability.
